Acadian Genealogy of Southwest Nova Scotia
available at the Centre acadien

From January 2001 to December 2003, a major project at the Centre acadien, Université Sainte-Anne, was completed with the goal of entering into a database the genealogy of Acadian families. The project was financed by the Western Valley Development Authority (WVDA) thanks to a contribution from the Smart Community program (Connecting Canadians at Industry Canada.

From January 2004, the Atlantic Canada Cultural and Economic Partnership (Heritage Canada and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) financed the continuation of this project. The Partnership is designed to stimulate economic development in Atlantic Canada by supporting strategic, cultural activities relating to the 400th anniversary of l'Acadie and the arrival of the French in North America. The funding of this project ended in March 2005.

Seventy-four (74) Acadian family genealogies (in total, close to
143 000 entries) are compiled into a database. The selected families in this project are mostly those whose descendants now reside in the counties of Digby and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

From old parish records, census and publications relating to Acadian genealogy available at the Centre acadien (see resources available at the Centre), the genealogists establish the head of the first ancestral families settled in Acadie since the 17th century and whose descendants still reside in southwest Nova Scotia. They then trace about ten generations of descendants which they enter into a database with the software "The Master Genealogist". The number of entries per family varies normally from a few hundred names to close to 10 000.

To request your genealogy : Contact the Centre acadien (in person, by mail, by telephone, by fax or par email) and indicate the information requested. In your request, you will normally provide the name, the place and date of birth of the second (sometimes first sometimes third) generation before you. Normally with this information the Centre will be able to print-out on paper (about 30 to 50 pages) your complete genealogy going back to your first ancestor who came to Acadie (Nova Scotia). In addition to the sources used to establish this genealogy and descriptive end notes, this printed genealogy will provide, conditional on available information found in our sources, the name of your ancestors, their spouse and children, with dates, etc. All these details are for personal use only, and the Centre acadien retains the copyright on same.
